What happens after the game
The game itself is not where all the learning happens. A meaningful share of it happens in the conversation immediately afterwards, and that conversation is easy to design badly.
The evidence, stated plainly
Tannenbaum and Cerasoli reviewed 46 studies of debriefing and found that structured debriefs outperformed unstructured ones by roughly 20 to 25 per cent. That is the figure this article rests on. It is worth being direct about how much weight it carries alone: one meta-analysis, not a convergent body of them. This piece would be more persuasive with three supporting reviews behind it. It has one, and saying so is more honest than dressing a thin base up as a settled one.
Structure, in that finding, means a debrief with a plan: what to review, and in what order, with specific questions ready in advance. An open "how did that go" depends entirely on whoever happens to be facilitating.
The design consequence
A debrief can only discuss what the game produced. A game with an invisible internal state gives it nothing to discuss. So does a game where mistakes vanish without a trace, or one where every session looks the same regardless of what the learner did.
The practical requirement this places on design is to make decisions visible, make mistakes recoverable and reviewable, and leave a record of what happened during that specific session. Two sources this article deliberately does not lean on
Fanning and Gaba's often-cited work on debriefing is a narrative review rather than a meta-analysis. It is useful for the vocabulary and the conceptual structure of a debrief, and this article uses it only that way. It does not add statistical weight to the claim above, and treating it as though it did would overstate the evidence.
Cheng and colleagues studied simulation-based education more broadly. Their work does not isolate debriefing as a separate causal factor from the simulation itself, so it is not used here to support any claim about debriefing specifically.
The practical takeaway
Plan the debrief with the same care as the game. A short, structured set of questions tied to what actually happened in that session will outperform an open-ended conversation, on the evidence available, by a margin worth designing for.
